Komatsu — TOWING

Operation - Section 3 OM3037 Page 3-8 Operating Instructions To Lower Body: When dumping on flat ground: TOWING It is very likely when dumping on flat ground that the dumped material will build up enough to prevent the body from lowering. In this case, the truck will have to be driven forward a short distance (just enough to clear the material) before the body can be lowered. Prior to towing a truck, many factors must be carefully considered. Serious personal injury and/or significant property damage may result if important safety prac- tices, procedures and preparation for moving heavy equipment are not observed. Do not tow the truck faster than 5 MPH (8 KPH). a.

Shift Selector Switch to “Forward”, release Brake Lock, depress Override button and drive just far enough forward for body to clear material. Stop, shift Selector Switch to “Neu- tral”, apply Brake Lock. A disabled machine may be towed after the following MINIMUM precautions have been taken. 1. Shut down engine. 2. Chock wheels on disabled truck to prevent move- ment while attaching tow bar. b. Move hoist lever forward to “down” position and release. Releasing the lever places hoist control valve in the “float” position allowing the body to return to frame. 3. If truck is equipped, install hydraulic connections for steering/braking and dumping between towing and towed vehicles.

Check towed vehicle for nor- mal braking and steering system operation. NOTE: If dumped material builds up at the rear of the body and the body cannot be lowered, then perform steps “c” and “d” below: 4. Empty all material from dump body of truck that is to be towed. c. Move hoist lever back to the “hoist” position to fully raise the dump body. Then release the hoist lever so it returns to the “hold” position. 5. Inspect tow bar for adequacy (approximately 1.5 times the gross vehicle weight of truck being towed). d. Shift Selector Switch to “Forward”, release Brake Lock, depress Override button and drive forward to clear the material.

Stop, shift Selector Switch to “Neutral”, apply Brake Lock and lower body again. 6. Determine that towing vehicle has adequate capacity to both move and stop the towed truck under all conditions. 7. Protect both operators in the event of tow bar fail- ure. NOTE: Failure to “hoist” the body after making an unsuccessful attempt at lowering the body may result in the dump body suddenly lowering after the truck has pulled ahead of the material that was previously preventing the body from lowering. 8. Release disabled truck brakes and remove block- ing. 9. Sudden movement may cause tow bar failure. Smooth and gradual truck movement is preferred. 10.

Minimize tow angle at all times - NEVER EXCEED 30°. The towed truck must be steered in the direction of the tow bar. CAUTION! The truck is not to be moved with the dump body raised except for emergency moves only. Failure to lower body before moving truck may cause damage to hoist cyl- inders, frame and/or body hinge pins. 9. With body returned to frame, move Selector Switch to “Forward”, release Brake Lock, and leave dump area carefully.
