CHASSIS MODIFICATIONS 2-19 E URO C ARGO E URO 4 - 5 2.8.3 Effect on the steering Generally, lengthening the wheelbase has a negative effect on the steering. Whenever national regulations require it, the limits on the overall dimensions must be observed as well as the limits concerning the effort applied on the steering wheel and the relevant operation times (e.g. ECE - R 79/01 standard or current EC Directive). The Table 2.10 gives the maximum wheelbase for the various models, for vehicles with standard steering, the maximum permitted load on the front axle and approved tyres.
Table 2.10 - Steering, maximum permitted wheelbase ML60, ML65E, ML75E, ML80EL ML80E, ML90E, ML100E, ML110EL, Ml120EL 5670 ML120E, ML130E, ML140E, ML150E, ML160E 6570 Ml180E, ML190EL 6700 ML100EW, ML140EW 4500 If longer wheelbases are required for certain types of body, specific approval must be obtained from IVECO and all necessary measures must be taken to improve the steering characteristics, such as a reduction of the maximum load allowed on the front axle, or the use of tyres and wheels with a smaller wheel offset. The option of using a supplementary pump must be approved by IVECO and the pump must be fitted by a firm specialising in this type of operation.
2.8.4 Effect on braking Generally, shortening the wheelbase has a negative effect on braking characteristics. Table 2.11 gives the wheelbase limits. Check with IVECO for the conditions (brake cylinder, minimum kerb weight, chassis section, technically permitted weights, tyres, height of centre of gravity) under which these values are permissible.
Table 2.11 - Braking, wheelbase alteration limits If longer wheelbases are required for certain types of body, specific approval must be requested from IVECO and measures must be taken to improve the braking characteristics, such as the reduction of the maximum load limit on the front axle, changing the brake cylinders or using tyres and wheels with lower loaded radius values.
