BUILDING & MOUNTING THE STRUCTURES 3-3 E UROCARGO Euro 4/5 3333.3 Subframes and bodies The following detailed instructions complement the general information given in Chapter 1. NOTE 3.1 Subframes and bodies The purpose of an subframe (subframe) is to ensure a uniform distribution of the load on the vehicle’s chassis and to increase the strength and rigidity of the main frame in relation to the particular use of the vehicle. The following points are to be borne in mind when constructing a subframe:

3.1.1 Material (steel subframe) Usually, provided the subframe is not to undergo great stress, the material used for its construction may be of a lower grade than that used for the vehicle chassis. Should the stress limits require it (e.g. if cranes or tail lifts are to be fitted), or if very high sections are to be avoided, material with better mechanical characteristics may be used. In this case it should be considered that a lower inertia moment of the reinforcing beam implies high bending stresses on the chassis frame. The properties of some materials that can be considered for the applications indicated are as follows.
