Technician Handbook 601 Hybrid Systems for Collision Repair Neutralizing Electrolyte Spills HV batteries contain a hazardous electrolyte. An electrolyte spill is very unlikely. HV battery electrolyte is a thick gel and well contained, and HV battery modules do not leak unless they are compressed by 25% or more. Still, if a leak occurs you should neutralize or dispose of the leaking electrolyte immediately. When cleaning up an electrolyte spill:

• Never touch the electrolyte without protective gear, or breathe the fumes • Wear chemical-resistant protective clothing and rubber lineman’s gloves (do not wear leather or wool) • Clean up with disposable towels NiMH Nickel-Metal Hydride Batteries • Electrolyte: Potassium and sodium hydroxide • Corrosive alkaline that reacts intensely with zinc, aluminum, tin & other active metals • Neutralize with boric acid diluted with water (boric acid is available at local drug stores) or vinegar • Test for neutralized electrolyte using litmus paper or ph test strips (available at hardware and pool supply stores) Li-ion Lithium-ion Batteries • Electrolyte:

Carbonate ester • Toxic, flammable organic solvent • Absorb any spilled electrolyte with drying sand, saw dust or waste cloth. Put the absorbent material in a sealed container and take it to an authorized hazardous materials recovery site 17 Collision Repair & Refinish Training
