28 ES300 – NEW FEATURES 1MZ-FE ENGINE The following items have been changed in the ’00 ES300. The method for detecting evaporative emission leaks has been changed and the composition of the evapo- rative emission control system has been partially changed. For details, see the General 2000 Features section. A thermostat monitor function has been newly provided. This function monitors the changes in the coolant temperature at the time the engine is started, and if the coolant temperature does not reach a specified value within a prescribed length of time, the thermostat is determined to be faulty.
To support NLEV (National Low Emission Vehicle), the amount of palladium, which is a constituent of the start catalyst, the manifold converter and the underfloor converter, has been changed. Also, the high- density cells are used in the start catalyst to increase the surface area of the catalyst, thus improving its catalytic performance. TRANSAXLE 1. Overdrive Switch The overdrive switch has been changed from the previous ON/OFF lock type switch to the momentary type switch. Pressing the momentary switch closes (turns ON) the contact points, and releasing the switch opens (turns OFF) the contact points. Accordingly, pressing the switch causes the signal to be input into the ECM.
While the vehicle is in motion, the overdrive engages or disengages depending on the operation of the over- drive switch. When the overdrive is OFF, turning the ignition switch from OFF to ON automatically turns the overdrive ON.
