volkswagen — Starting the engine

Starting the engine ● Never leave the vehicle unattended with the engine running, particularly if a gear or posi- tion has been selected. The vehicle may sud- denly move or experience abnormal events, resulting in damage, fire, and serious injury. – Vehicles with ignition lock: Turn the vehicle key to position → Fig. 83 1 . Switch on the ignition. – Vehicles with starter button: press the starter but- ton. Switch on the ignition. WARNING – depress the brake pedal and hold it until the electronic parking brake is switched off. Never start the engine using an accelerator as it may cause an explosion or sudden high-speed operation of the engine. – Vehicles with a manual gearbox:

fully depress the clutch pedal and hold it until the engine has been started. Move the gear lever to neutral position. ● Never use start boosters. NOTICE – Vehicles with an automatic gearbox: Move the se- lector lever to position P or N . ● Avoid restarting the engine while the vehicle is in motion or directly after switching off the engine. – Vehicles with ignition lock: turn the vehicle key in the ignition lock to position → Fig. 83 2 with- out depressing the accelerator. – Release the vehicle key once the engine has started. ● When the engine is cold, avoid high engine speeds, driving at full throttle, and overloading the engine. – Vehicles with starter button:

press the starter but- ton → page 98 without depressing the acceler- ator. There must be a valid vehicle key in the vehicle. ● Never attempt to start the engine by pushing or towing the vehicle. This may cause un- burned fuel to enter and damage the catalytic converter. – If the engine does not start immediately, stop the starting procedure and try again after around 1 minute. Never use the engine for driving or towing the vehicle in gear with the key in the ignition posi- tion → Fig. 83 2 , for example when the fuel tank is empty. This may damage the engine. NOTICE – Vehicles with starter button: Perform emergency start → page 101 when necessary. – Vehicles with starter button:

the starter button is deactivated if the vehicle was locked using the vehicle key. If you are in the vehicle and need to start the engine, unlock the vehicle first or perform an emergency start → page 101. ● Add fuel if necessary → page 147 or use a jumper cable to start the engine. → page 159. ● If the engine does not start, seek expert assis- tance from a Volkswagen dealership for pro- fessional testing. – Switch off the electronic parking brake before you start driving. NOTICE WARNING Please note that the density of air decreases with increasing altitude and this may make it more difficult to start the engine.

To reduce the risk of injury or death while starting or running the engine, pay attention to the following: ● Never start or run the engine in an enclosed or poorly ventilated space. The engine ex- haust gas contains colourless and odourless poisonous carbon monoxide, which can cause unconsciousness and death. Do not warm up the engine by running it while the vehicle is stationary. Instead, pull off as soon as there is good visibility through the windows. This helps the engine reach operating temperature faster and reduces emissions. ● Do not start the engine if there is a spill of oil, fuel, or other flammable materials under or around the vehicle or if they are leaking from the vehicle.

When the engine is started, electrical con- sumers with a higher power consumption are temporarily switched off.  182.5C1.TRO.74 Driving 99
