-- Parking lock The drive wheels are blocked. May only be selec- ted when the vehicle is stationary. To disengage this selector lever position, depress the brake pedal and switch on the ignition. -- Reverse gear Move the selector lever to this position when re- versing. May only be selected when the vehicle is stationary. -- Neutral When the selector lever is moved to this position, the gearbox is not engaged in any gear. No force is transmitted to the wheels and the braking ef- fect of the engine is not available. -- Forward gear Position : Normal mode.
lock engages if the brake pedal is not depressed and the lever is in position N for more than ap- proximately 1 second and the vehicle is travelling no faster than around 5 km/h. Always select the appropriate selector lever po- sition based on the actual situation. Selecting the wrong position can cause you to lose con- trol of the vehicle and lead to accidents and se- rious or fatal injuries. WARNING ● Never depress the accelerator when select- ing a position. ● The vehicle will start moving if the brake pedal is released when the engine is running and a position is engaged. ● Never select reverse gear or engage the parking lock P when the vehicle is in motion.
All forward gears are shifted up and down auto- matically. The timing of the gear shift is deter- mined by the engine load, your individual driving style and the speed of the vehicle. WARNING Unintentional vehicle movements may cause accidents and serious or fatal injuries. The forward gears are automatically shifted up later and down earlier than in selector lever posi- tion D . This exploits the engine’s full power re- serves. The timing of the gear shift is determined by the engine load, your individual driving style and the speed of the vehicle. Position : Sport mode. ● The driver must never leave the driver seat when the engine is running and a position has been selected.
Always switch on the electronic parking brake and move the selec- tor lever to position P if it is necessary to leave the vehicle. P . ● Hold the vehicle by the foot brake if the en- gine is running and the position D , S or R is engaged. Otherwise, the vehicle will creep forward because the power transmission system is not completely disconnected while the engine is idling. To change between positions D and S , tap the se- lector lever from D/S to the rear → Fig. 88 . The selector lever will always move back into se- lector lever position D/S . This also functions in the Tiptronic gate → page 106. ● Never select reverse gear R or P .
● Never leave the vehicle on uphill gradients in selector lever position N , as the vehicle will roll downhill even if the engine is switched on. Selector lever lock The selector lever lock in position P or N prevents a gear selector position from being engaged in- advertently and the vehicle being set in motion unintentionally as a result. To release the selector lever lock, switch on the ignition and depress the brake pedal. Then press the lock button in the selector lever handle in the direction of the arrow → Fig. 88 . If the electronic parking brake is not switch on the electronic parking brake and move the selec- tor lever to position P.
P is engaged, the vehicle may move a few centimetres forwards or back- wards. NOTICE The selector lever lock is not engaged if the posi- tion N is skipped, for example when shifting from R to D the selector lever lock is not engaged. This makes it possible, for instance, to “rock” the ve- hicle backwards and forwards to free the vehicle if it is stuck in snow or mud. The selector lever If the selector lever is accidentally moved to N when driving, take your foot off the ac- celerator. Wait for the engine to reach idling speed in the neutral position before selecting a position again. 182.5C1.TRO.74 Driving 105
