88 SEBU7899-05 Maintenance Section Fuel System Primary Filter/Water Separator - Drain 7. Repeat Step 6 until the engine starts and the engine runs. Note: Failure to tighten all fittings could result in serious fuel leaks. 8. After the engine has operated smoothly for 30 seconds, turn the priming valve (3) to the “Open (Run)” position. Note: Shortened injector life may occur if the priming valve (3) is left in the “Closed (Prime)” position. 9. Clean any residual fuel from the engine components. g01453091 Illustration 52 (1) Element (2) Bowl (3) Drain i02927285 Fuel System Primary Filter/Water Separator - Drain Bowl (2) should be monitored daily for signs of water.
If water is present, drain the water from the bowl. SMCS Code: 1260-543; 1263-543 1. Open drain (3). The drain is a self-ventilated drain. Catch the draining water in a suitable container. Dispose of the water properly. Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or elec- trical components can cause a fire. To help pre- vent possible injury, turn the start switch off when changing fuel filters or water separator elements. Clean up fuel spills immediately. 2. Close drain (3). NOTICE The water separator is under suction during normal engine operation. Ensure that the drain valve is tight- ened securely to help prevent air from entering the fuel system.
NOTICE Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, test- ing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before open- ing any compartment or disassembling any compo- nent containing fluids. i02927282 Fuel System Primary Filter (Water Separator) Element - Replace Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, “Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog” for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. SMCS Code: 1260-510-FQ; 1263-510-FQ Water in the fuel can cause the engine to run rough. Water in the fuel may cause an electronic unit injector to fail.
If the fuel has been contaminated with water, the element should be changed before the regularly scheduled interval. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. NOTICE Do not allow dirt to enter the fuel system. Thoroughly clean the area around a fuel system component that will be disconnected. Fit a suitable cover over discon- nected fuel system component. The primary filter/water separator also provides filtration in order to help extend the life of the secondary fuel filter. The element should be changed regularly. If a vacuum gauge is installed, the primary filter/water separator should be changed at 50 to 70 kPa (15 to 20 inches Hg).
