Located in the center of the city, it dates back to the time of the reconquest of Seville by King Fernando III of Castile in 1248. In this neighbourhood lived a large number of Jews, becoming the second largest population in Spain, after Toledo. About two centuries later, the neighbourhood declined considerably with the expulsion of the Jewish community in 1483.
It was not until the late 19th and early 20th centuries, that a recovery of the neighbourhood was undertaken with the opening of Mateos Gago street and the redevelopment of Santa Cruz, among other initiatives. The unique architecture of the neighbourhood, with its narrow streets from the Muslim and Jewish legacy, creates a special microclimate and protects from the summer heat with its abundance of plants, flowers, water features and shade.
Start your route in Plaza del Triunfo, next to the monument of Inmaculada Concepcion and surrounded by World Heritage buildings such as the Cathedral, the Archive of the Indies and the Royal Palace.
Cross the Patio de Banderas, once part of the palace, to arrive at Callejyn del Agua. Walk slowly and enjoy a stroll through one of the most romantic streets of Seville to reach the square that gives its name to the neighbourhood, with its famous “Cerrajerнa’s Cross ” in the center, the work of Almonte’s Sebastian Conde.
Keep strolling through these narrow streets to arrive at the Plaza de los Refinadores, where you will find the Statue of Don Juan. Explore every corner of the Jewish quarter and you will arrive at the church of Santa Marнa la Blanca, the only church in Seville built on top of a Jewish synagogue, whose remains you will be able to visit inside.
Walk down Ximйnez de Enciso Street and enter Santa Teresa Street, passing between Murilloґs House and the Las Teresas Convent, where the famous Sevillian painter and Santa Teresa de Jesъs lived at different times, respectively.
Keep walking through these winding streets to get to Plaza de los Venerables, at the foot of two special buildings: the old “Hospital Los Venerables Sacerdotes”, where you can also find the Diego Velбzquez Centre; and the old inn “Hosteria del Laurel”, where the life of one of the most important sevillian myths unfolds, Don Juan Tenorio.
Legend says that the writer Josй Zorilla, from Valladolid, was housed in this inn, when he created his well-known character. Pimienta and Susona streets, full of interesting details, will lead you to Plaza de Doca Elvira, where at one time, there was one of the most popular “Corral de Comedias” in the city.
