2 System Overview Introduction The components of the BY2 Unlimited (BY2 Unlimited), 6LY3, 6CX and SY GEN III Electronic Control Systems are very similar. The BY2 Classic Control System uses a different architecture and is covered separately at the end of this section. BY2 Unlimited, 6LY3, 6cx, and SY GEN III The BY2 Unlimited, 6LY3, 6CX and SY GEN III Electronic Control Systems all have the following components: Engine Interface Control Head Displays All engine control systems have at least one of each of the above listed items. They may also incorporate two or more items from each category. All of the above items communicate with each other over a CAN (Control Area Network) Bus.
The CAN Bus is an electrical cable with five wires that carries power and digital communication signals to all devices connected to the cable. “Section 8 - Networks”, later in this manual, goes into detail about how the CAN Bus operates. Engine Interface Modules Just as the name implies this is an electronic module that connects the various engines to the CAN Bus. The module sends and receives information from both the engine and the CAN Bus and also allows the connection of other items to the CAN Bus. There is one Engine Interface Module per engine. While the specific tasks of the Engine Interface Module vary by engine type, below are some typical examples of tasks it handles.
Accepts data such as RPM, oil pressure, coolant temperature, battery voltage, load, torque, turbo boost, engine hours, etc. from the engine computer and sends them out on the CAN Bus. Accepts CAN Bus signals from the control head about throttle and gear position and sends them to the engine and the transmission. Sends engine alarm information out on the CAN Bus. Applies logic to the engine control signals coming from the control head to assure the engine commands are reasonable for the engine and transmission. Accepts signals from other typical engine room devices and sends that data out on the CAN Bus.
Some examples are fuel levels from tank senders, trim position, transmission oil pressure or temperature, and speed signals from a paddle wheel. Monitors the condition of the devices connected to the CAN Bus and assures a safe shutdown if the condition of the CAN Bus and the required devices are not operating properly. New i8150 Features The trim-signal from MerCruiser BRAVO or the ZT350 Smartstick® can be connected and read on CAN Bus gauge or display. Works with i5601-V4.01 display for calibration of trim sender. Improved trolling software V1.01 implemented for smoother trolling modulation. © 2011 Yanmar Marine International • Rev. 2.0 2:2 Yanmar Electronic Control Systems Technical Manual
