Workshop Manual S3.8 Engine A030K288 (Issue 2) 01-2010 Recommended Antifreeze Agents Before adding the antifreeze agent into the cooling system. The specification for low silicate antifreeze which meets ASTM 4985 test (GM6038M spec) criteria. i.Inspect the cooling system for leakages and clean it thoroughly. Note : ii.Inspect the thermostat and replace if found 1. Engine is supplied with Premix Coolant as First Fill. defective. It is advisable to attach a warning sign to the radiator neck reading. 2. Mixing of other brands with Antifreeze Coolant is not recommended. "Antifreeze Solution is effective upto 40 0 C.

Do not drain off cooling system' Before adding the antifreeze agent into the cooling system. i.Inspect the cooling system for leakages and It is recommended that the entire cooling system should be drained and filled with fresh mixture of antifreeze agent and water in the ratio of 50:50 for ambient temperature of upto -40 0 C Coolant should be drained and replenished in the recommended ratio every two years Or 2400 hrs. which ever is earlier. clean it thoroughly. Certain precautions have to be taken to enable the cooling system to function properly at very low ambient temperatures. To attain the recommended working temperature of the engine faster, it is necessary to use a radiator blind.

Electrical System In view of the grave risk of damage due to frost, the cooling system of the engine should be filled with recommended quantity of antifreezing agent. At low ambient temperatures particular care should be taken for electrical system. Useful instructions on this subject are given below. Percentage of antifreeze agent in cooling system which depends upon ambient temperature is shown in following table : A full state of charge in battery should be maintained by carefully servicing and reduced current consumption. Below ambient temperatures, the starting capacity of a battery is seriously affected.

Upto Ambient Percentage Temperature oC _________________________ W ater A ntifreeze agent The specific gravity of the electrolyte should be raised from 1.21 to 1.28 when operating at temperatures below -15 0 C. The battery should be removed and stored in a warm place when not in operation. While reconnecting the battery, observe polarity and care should be taken to check that the terminals are kept clean and free from oxide. A run down battery should be charged. Do not add distilled water to discharged or cold battery. All Temp. ranges 50 50 16
