L Note: 1 [ABS] Place rubber diaphragm and reservoir cap in position. Carefully tighten the securing screws. e Attention: If the vehicle is equipped with ABS , the brake sys- tem has to be bled using the BMW MoDiTeC, and the Control Units, Toolbox ABS, routine; this proce- dure is supplementary to that described in the Re- pair Manual. If the BMW MoDiTeC is not used there is a danger of residual air remaining in the control circuits of the ABS system. E000120 – Support the motorcycle on its side stand. • Move the handlebars to the straight-ahead posi- tion. • Remove cap (1) with rubber diaphragm, draw off the old brake fluid and clean the reservoir.
• Top up the brake fluid in the reservoir to the specified level. • Connect the brake bleeding device to the bleed screw on the brake caliper. • Open the bleed screw by half a turn. • [ABS] Bleed the brakes using the BMW MoDiTeC. Brake fluid ...................................................DOT 4 X Tightening torque: Bleed screw ................................................... 7 Nm e Attention: While bleeding the system, do not allow the brake fluid level to drop below the bottom edge of the sight glass (arrow), as otherwise air will be drawn into the brake system. Bleed the system again if this hap- pens.
Changing brake fluid and bleeding brake system (rear brakes) • Press the brake caliper against the brake disc in order to force the piston back. • Remove cap (2) with rubber diaphragm, draw off the old brake fluid and clean the reservoir. • Top up the brake fluid in the reservoir to the specified level. 00.50 • Draw off brake fluid until it emerges clear and free from air bubbles. • Tighten the bleed screw. • Installation is the reverse of the removal proce- dure: pay particular attention to the following. • Before reassembling, carefully wipe the rim of the reservoir, the rubber gaiter and the cover to remove all traces of brake fluid. • Add brake fluid up to the top of the sight glass.
