HOME Table 1-8. Antidotes for Battery Acid 7. Check battery voltage and make sure it is at recommended specification. Charge battery at rate and time specified as required. TREATMENT CONTACT Flush with water. External Internal Drink large quantities of milk or water, followed by milk of magnesia, vegetable oil or beaten eggs. Get immediate medical attention. sm01708 Flush with water. Get immediate medical attention. Eyes 1 4 2 DISCONNECTION/REMOVAL 3 1. Remove air box cover, right side cover, and remove main fuse. See 7.4 MAXI-FUSE . 2. Remove complete air box and air box stud. See 1.5 AIR CLEANER AND EXHAUST SYSTEM . 4 1. Positive battery terminal hold down bolt (located under boot) 2.
Negative battery terminal bolt 3. Hold down strap 4. Tabs Cover the throttle body bores with duct tape to prevent objects from falling down the injector bores. Do NOT use shop cloths or objects that could damage the throttle plates. (00212d) 3. See Figure 1-25 . Cover injector intakes (injector bore). Figure 1-26. Battery Removal (typical) overtightening. Figure 1-25. Air Box Removed (Injector intakes shown by arrows) 5. Inspect the battery for discoloration, raised top or a warped or distorted case, which might indicate that the battery has been frozen, overheated or overcharged. 6. Inspect the battery case for cracks or leaks. Disconnect negative (-) battery cable first.
If positive (+) cable should contact ground with negative (-) cable con- nected, the resulting sparks can cause a battery explosion, which could result in death or serious injury. (00049a) 4. See Figure 1-26 . Remove negative and positive battery terminal bolts. 5. Stretch battery hold down strap and remove from tab to release tension on strap. Battery hold down strap will then come free from lower tab and can be completely removed. 6. Firmly pull battery out and slightly upward to remove bat- tery from battery caddy. 2009 VRSC Service: Maintenance 1-21 sm01694 CLEANING AND INSPECTION 1. Battery top must be clean and dry.
Dirt and electrolyte on top of the battery can cause battery to self-discharge. Clean battery top with a solution of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and water (5 teaspoons baking soda per quart or liter of water). When the solution stops bubbling, rinse off the battery with clean water. 2. Clean cable connectors and battery terminals using a wire brush or sandpaper. Remove any oxidation. 3. Inspect the battery screws, clamps and cables for breakage, loose connections and corrosion. Clean clamps. 4. Check the battery posts for melting or damage caused by
