Komatsu — Komatsu Construction Equipment Operation and Safety Manual

. SAFETY GENERAL PRECAUTIONS Even going close to high-voltage cables can cause electric shock, which may cause serious burns or even death. Always maintain a safe distance (see the table on the right) between the machine and the electric cable. Check with the local power company about safe operating procedure before starting operations. To prepare for any possible emergencies, wear rubber shoes and gloves. Lay a rubber sheet on top of the seat, and be careful not to touch the chassis with any exposed part of your body. Use a signalman to give warning if the machine approaches too close to the electric cables.

When carrying out operations near high voltage cables, do not let anyone come close to the machine. If the machine should come too close or touch the electric cable, to prevent electric shock, the operator should not leave the operator's compartment until it has been confirmed that the electricity has been shut off. Also, do not let anyone come close to the machine. 66,000 V Over 4 m (14 ft) ENSURE GOOD VISIBILITY Check for any persons or obstacles in the area around the machine and check the conditions of the jobsite to ensure that operations and travel can be carried out safely. Always do as follows.

Position a signalman if there are areas at the rear of the machine where the visibility is not good. When working in dark places, turn on the working lamp and front lamps installed to the machine, and set up additional lighting in the work area if necessary. Stop operations if the visibility is poor, such as in mist, snow, rain, or dust. 2 - 17 WORKING ON LOOSE GROUND ng your machine too close to the edge of cliffs, overhangs, and deep ditches. The Avoid traveling or operati mach the edge erhangs, groun d ma y be w eak in su ch area s. If th e ground should collapse under the w eight or v ibration of th e machine there i s a h azard t hat the m achine may f all or ti p over.

Remember t hat the soil a fter heav y rain or blasting or after earthquake s is we ak in th ese area s. When working on embankments o r near excavated di tches, t here i s a hazard th at the weight an d vibration of the machine wi ll caus e the soi l to collapse. Before startin g operations , take steps to ensur e that th e ground is safe and to prevent the machin e from rolling over o r fallin g. DO NOT GO CLOSE TO HIGH-VOLTAGE CABLE S Do not tr avel or oper ate the m achine near e lectric cables . There is a hazar d of electric shock, which may c ause serious injury or property damage. O n jobsite s where the m achine may g o close to electric c able s, alwa ys do as follows .

Befor e starting wo rk near e lectric c ables , inform the lo cal power company o f the w ork to be performed, a nd ask them t o take t he necessary action.
