volkswagen — Electronic immobiliser

The engine cannot, for example, be started with the starter button if the button cell in the vehicle key is weak or flat. Carry out an emer- gency start → page 101. ● When the vehicle key is removed from the ignition, the steering lock may activate and you will no longer be able to steer the vehi- cle. When starting from cold, the engine may run with increased operating noise for a short time. This is quite normal, and no cause for concern.  The components of the exhaust system be- come very hot and can lead to a fire and cause serious or fatal injuries.

WARNING ● Always park the vehicle so that no part of the exhaust system can come into contact with highly flammable materials underneath the vehicle ( e.g. undergrowth, leaves, dry grass or spilt fuel). Switching off the engine – Park the vehicle → page 122. – Bring the vehicle to a standstill → . ● Never apply additional underseal or anti-cor- rosion coatings to the exhaust pipes, catalyt- ic converters, heat shields or particulate fil- ter. – Vehicles with ignition lock: Turn the vehicle key in the ignition lock to position → Fig. 83 0 . – Vehicles with starter button: briefly press the start- er button → Fig. 84 .

If the engine cannot be switched off, carry out the emergency switch- off procedure → page 101. NOTICE – Follow the instructions in the instrument clus- ter → page 13. If the vehicle has been driven at high load for a long period, the engine can overheat when it is switched off. Allow the engine to run in neutral for approximately 2 minutes before switching it off. Warning before leaving the vehicle Vehicles with an automatic gearbox: If the selector lever is not in position P , an acoustic warning signal will sound when the driver door is opened and the warning message Please move the selector lever to P gear! will appear on the instrument clus- ter display.

This warns you that the vehicle could potentially roll away. When leaving the vehicle, always switch on the electronic parking brake to prevent the vehicle from rolling away. In vehicles with an automatic gearbox, vehi- cle key can only be removed from the igni- tion lock if the selector lever is in position P. After the engine has been switched off, the radiator fan in the engine compartment may run on for a few minutes. The radiator fan will switch itself off automatically.  Never switch off the engine while the vehicle is in motion. Otherwise, it may cause loss of con- trol over the vehicle, accidents and serious or fatal injuries.

WARNING Electronic immobiliser The immobiliser helps to prevent the engine from being started and driven with an unauthorised vehicle key. ● The airbags and belt tensioners do not func- tion when the ignition is switched off. ● The brake booster does not work after the ignition is switched off and you need to ap- ply more force to depress the brake pedal to stop the vehicle. A valid vehicle key contains an electronic chip. When a valid vehicle key is inserted in the igni- tion lock, the electronic immobiliser will be deac- tivated automatically. ● When the ignition is switched off, the steer- ing system does not work and you need to apply more force to steer the vehicle.

The electronic immobiliser is automatically acti- vated when the vehicle key is removed from the ignition lock. In vehicles with Keyless Access, the electronic immobiliser is activated automatically when a valid vehicle key is located outside the vehicle only.  Owner's manual 100
