Limits of the sensors: Radar sensors only recognize vehicles that are driving in the same direction. Objects that cannot be detected: – Persons. – Animals. – stationary vehicles. – Crossing or oncoming vehicles. – Other stationary obstacles. Stationary vehicles If a vehicle detected by the ACC turns or leaves its lane and there is a stationary vehicle ahead, ACC will not react to the stationary vehicle → Fig. 95 . Fig. 95 Vehicle that is changing lane. Vehicle that is turning or stationary Limits of the ACC ACC should be interrupted in the following driv- ing conditions due to system limitations → in Introduction on page 113: – Driving in poor weather conditions, e.g.
heavy rain, snow or heavy spray. Turning The radar sensors always detect vehicles in a straight line. Therefore, it may suddenly detect vehicles in sharp turns or not detect vehicles in front → Fig. 94 . – Driving through road works, tunnels or toll sta- tions. Vehicles outside the sensor range ACC may not react or may react with a delay or in an undesired way in the following driving condi- tions: – Vehicles driving outside the sensor range and in the vicinity of the vehicle, e.g., motorcycles → Fig. 94 . – Driving through road works, tunnels or toll sta- tions. – Driving in the parking lot. – Driving on roads with embedded metal ob- jects, e.g. railway tracks.
– Driving on roads with loose chippings. – Vehicles switching from the adjacent lane in front of the vehicle → Fig. 95 . – Driving on a multi-lane road when other vehi- cles are travelling at a lower speed in the over- taking lane. – Vehicles with protruding attachments or add- ons. – After external force on components in the area of the radar sensors, e.g. after a rear-end colli- sion. Using ACC in the above driving conditions may cause accidents, serious or fatal injuries, and vi- olations of legal requirements.
WARNING Delayed response of ACC If the sensor system is exposed to environmental conditions that impair sensor functioning, the driver assist systems may detect this only after a certain delay. For this reason, any restrictions to functions may be displayed only after a delay at the start of the journey and when driving → in Introduction on page 113. 182.5C1.TRO.74 Driver assist systems 115
