volkswagen — Identification of fuels and fuel standards

Fuel and emission control Fuel types and refuelling Safety information on using fuel  Introduction This chapter contains information on the follow- ing subjects: Incorrect handling of fuel can cause explosions, fire, serious burns and other injuries. WARNING – Identification of fuels and fuel standards 147 – Petrol 148 – Refuelling 149 ● Switch off the engine, ignition, your mobile phone and other radio equipment before re- fuelling. The tank flap is located at the rear right-hand side of the vehicle. ● Avoid electrostatic discharges by not enter- ing the vehicle during refuelling. For information about the warning lamp and in- dicator lamp, refer to Troubleshooting → page 151.

 ● Make sure that the tank cap is closed proper- ly and no fuel can escape. ● Observe the applicable safety instructions and local regulations on handling fuel. Identification of fuels and fuel standards Incorrect refuelling can lead to vehicle damage. WARNING  Please refer to and on page 147. ● Use only fuels that have been approved for the vehicle. ● Do not use fuels that contain metals and use only Volkswagen-approved service additives in the approved quantity. ● Immediately remove any fuel that is spilled from all vehicle components. CAUTION Fuel may leak out of the fuel canister and ig- nite. This could cause fire and injuries. Fig. 118 On the inside of the tank flap:

fuel infor- mation label ● Do not carry a fuel canister in the vehicle. Fuels can pollute the environment. Collect any service fluids that are spilled and dis- pose of them correctly. Different engines require different fuels. There is a factory-fitted fuel information sticker in the tank flap → Fig. 118 that indicates the fuel that must be used for the vehicle. The tank flap cannot be opened manually. Seek expert assistance in an emergency.  The fuel information label specifies the minimum fuel grade (e.g. minimum RON92). If only one fuel grade or RON is listed on the la- bel, it represents the minimum requirement.

The vehicle may also be filled with fuel that has a higher RON than the engine requires. However, this does not provide any advantage in terms of fuel consumption or engine output.  182.5C1.TRO.74 Fuel and emission control 147
