original coolant that meets the local tempera- ture requirements shall be filled as soon as possible! vehicle and may cause corrosion damage in the engine or even lead to failure of the en- gine. WARNING ● Add coolant shall not exceed the upper limit of the marked area. Otherwise, when the engine reaches the hot state, the excess coolant may overflow under the pressure of the system and damage the components in the engine com- partment. Escaping hot steam or coolant can cause seri- ous burns. ● Never open the bonnet if you can see or hear steam or coolant coming out of the engine compartment! Always wait until you can no longer see or hear steam or coolant coming from the engine compartment.
● If the coolant loss is large, the engine is not cooling completely, do not add coolant! In this case, it indicates that there is leakage fault in the cooling system. Please contact the quali- fied workshop to check the system as soon as possible, otherwise, the engine will be dam- aged. ● Do not open the bonnet until the engine cools down. Touching hot components can burn your skin. ● The following matters must be paid atten- tion to before opening the bonnet after en- gine cooling: – Switch on the electronic parking brake and move the selector lever to position P Move the selector lever to neutral. – Remove the vehicle key from the ignition lock.
– Always keep children away from the en- gine compartment and never leave chil- dren unsupervised. ● Do not add coolant when the coolant in the expansion tank is completely exhausted! Oth- erwise air may enter the cooling system. Do not drive on. Seek expert assistance! Other- wise it may cause engine damage! ● Must fill the vehicle oil according to the sys- tem function, do not add the wrong oil! Other- wise, this can cause serious malfunctions and damage the engine. ● The cooling system is under pressure when the engine is hot!
At this time, do not open the coolant expansion tank cover, otherwise, the coolant may be ejected from the expan- sion tank, serious scald or injury to the oper- ator. – Turn the cap of the coolant expansion tank slowly and very carefully anticlockwise while exerting slight downwards pressure on the cap. – Always protect your face, hands and arms from hot coolant or steam when you have to open the cap of the expansion tank with a large, thick cloth. Troubleshooting Please refer to and on page 165 and at the start of the chapter on page 175. Engine coolant The warning lamp flashes red. The engine coolant temperature is too high or the coolant level is too low. Do not drive on!
Stop as soon as practicable and safe to do so. – Switch off the engine. ● Do not spill oil on engine components or ex- haust system when filling vehicle oil! Other- wise, it may cause a fire. Glycol in engine coolant can ignite under certain conditions. – Allow the engine to cool down. Engine cooling system: – Check the coolant level → page 174. NOTICE Do not drive on or leave the engine running if the warning lamp does not go out even though the coolant level is correct. ● Fill only with original coolant according to Volkswagen’s specification! Other types of coolant may not meet the requirements of the 182.5C1.TRO.74 – Seek expert assistance. Checking and refilling 177
