lit, the vehicle should be checked by a suitably qualified workshop. Volkswagen recommends using a Volkswagen dealership. ● 12-volt vehicle batteries should only be charged in well-ventilated spaces. ● Never charge a 12-volt vehicle battery which is frozen or has been frozen! Note that dis- charged 12-volt vehicle batteries can already freeze at temperatures of around 0°C. If the 12-volt vehicle battery was disconnected for an extended period, the system may not able to calculate or correctly display the time when the next service is due. → page 13 ● The 12-volt vehicle battery must be replaced if it has ever frozen.
Automatic switch-off for electrical consumers If the 12-volt vehicle battery is subject to high loads, the intelligent onboard supply manage- ment system automatically performs various measures to prevent discharge of the 12-volt ve- hicle battery: ● Incorrectly connected cables can cause a short circuit. First connect the positive cable and then the negative cable. NOTICE – The idling speed is increased so that the alter- nator provides more electricity. ● Never connect or disconnect the 12-volt vehi- cle battery if the ignition is switched on or the engine is running!
Do not use batteries that do not match the technical specifications of the vehicle; otherwise, the electrical system or electronic components of the vehicle may be damaged, resulting in other failures, such as automatic engine start-stop system failure. – The performance of large electrical consumers may be reduced or they may be switched off completely. – The USB power supply to the socket may be interrupted briefly while the engine is being started. ● If accessories that supply electric power are connected to the 12-volt socket to charge the 12-volt vehicle battery, this can damage the electrical system and the electronic compo- nents and lead to electrical malfunctions.
If the ignition is switched on for an extended pe- riod when the engine is switched off or the side or parking lights are switched on for a long time when the vehicle is parked, the intelligent on- board supply management system cannot always prevent discharge of the 12-volt vehicle battery. Dispose of the 12-volt vehicle battery in ac- cordance with the relevant regulations. 12- volt vehicle batteries may contain toxic substan- ces such as sulphuric acid and lead. Discharge of 12-volt vehicle battery – By long standing periods without running the engine, especially if the ignition is switched on. Electrolyte can pollute the environment!
Clean up any service fluid leakages and dis- pose of them properly according to relevant reg- ulations. – Through use of electrical consumers when the ignition is switched off. Use of a 12-volt vehicle battery that does not have the same specifications and dimensions as the factory-fitted 12-volt vehicle battery can lead to short circuits or cause a fire. This can result in serious or fatal injuries! WARNING Troubleshooting Please refer to and on page 165 and and at the start of the chapter on page 179. 12-volt vehicle battery The warning light lights up red.
● Always use a maintenance-free and leak- proof 12-volt vehicle battery that has the same specifications and dimensions as the factory-fitted 12-volt vehicle battery. The engine failed. Do not charge the 12-volt ve- hicle battery when the engine is running. WARNING Switch off any electrical consumers that are not required. Seek expert assistance. A highly explosive mixture of gases is given off when the 12-volt vehicle battery is charging! The start/ stop system cannot start the en- gine. → page 101 Owner's manual 182
