should be replaced at the qualified workshop in a timely manner. Seat belts must be re- placed even if there is no apparent damage to the surface! At the same time, the seat belt fastening device should be checked for damage. Frontal collisions and the laws of physics Please refer to at the start of the chapter on page 30. ● Do not attempt to repair, modify or remove your seat belt yourself. All repairs of seat belts, seat belt winders and latches/latches shall be performed by the qualified work- shop. Warning lamp Please refer to at the start of the chapter on page 30. Fig.
20 The vehicle was driven towards a brick wall and none of the occupants were wearing seat belts When the vehicle starts to drive and the vehicle speed exceeds 25km/h without wearing the seat belt, or unbuckle the seat belt during driving, the system will emit a signal tone for several seconds and the warning lights → Fig. 19 will flash at the same time. Fig. 19 Warning light in the instrument cluster Fig. 21 The condition of a vehicle with unbelted oc- cupants crashing into a brick wall The physics of a head-on collision is fairly simple. When a vehicle is in motion, both the vehicle and the occupant → Fig. 20 have energy called “ki- netic” energy.
When the ignition switch is turned on and the driver and front passenger fasten their seat belts, the seat belt warning light goes off. The higher the speed and the greater the mass, the more energy is released in the event of an accident. WARNING However, speed is the decisive factor. For exam- ple, when speed increases from 25km/h to 50km/h, kinetic energy will increase four times. Wearing seat belts improperly or not at all in- creases the risk of death and injury. Only proper use of the seat belt can give full play to its pro- tective effect. The amount of kinetic energy depends on the speed of the vehicle and the mass of the occu- pants.
The higher the speed and the greater the mass, the more energy is released in the event of an accident. The driver and passenger who are not wearing seat belts are not “integrated” with the vehicle. When a frontal collision occurs, the vehicle slows down, and the driver and passenger continue to 182.5C1.TRO.74 Safety precautions 31
