Toyota — HYBRID SYSTEMS FOR COLLISION REPAIR Course 601 Technician Handbook

Technician Handbook 601 Hybrid Systems for Collision Repair Hybrid System Components Hybrid vehicles share many similar basic components. (See Repair Manual for model-specific components.) Common hybrid system components include: Engine • Drives the vehicle at medium to high speeds • Can drive MG1 to generate electricity when required Hybrid Transaxle Houses two Motor/Generators and a compound gear unit.

• MG1 serves as the starter motor for the engine, and as a generator to convert energy from the engine into electricity • MG2 drives the vehicle at low speeds, and serves as a generator to convert energy from braking into electricity • The compound gear unit balances the output from the two Motor/Generators Inverter Assembly • Boosts high-voltage DC to an even higher-voltage AC to power MG1 & MG2 • Changes AC back to DC during power generation • Coverts high-voltage DC to 12 V DC 6 Collision Repair & Refinish Training
