Technician Handbook 601 Hybrid Systems for Collision Repair Engine The Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) is the main power source for the vehicle. Toyota hybrid systems use many engine configurations, but the engines used on hybrid vehicles share some unique features: Electric Water Pump Many vehicles (such as the 2010 Prius and 2010 HS250h) use an electric water pump to circulate engine coolant through the heater core even when the engine is off. Because the pump is driven by an electric motor, there is no accessory belt. Inspection Mode In READY mode, the hybrid system can start and stop the engine as needed.
This can interfere with certain engine service procedures (such as ignition timing, emissions testing, etc.). To prevent this, many hybrid vehicles provide an “inspection mode” that keeps the engine running. Inspection Mode can be entered using the Techstream or using a manual procedure. To enter inspection mode manually, perform the following steps within 60 seconds:
• Turn IG-ON (but not READY ON) • Press the accelerator pedal 2 times in Park • Shift to Neutral • Press the accelerator pedal 2 times (with the brake pedal depressed) • Shift to Park • Press the accelerator pedal 2 times • Turn READY-ON (either with the smart button or ignition key) When the inspection mode is activated, the slip indicator meter will illuminate and the multi-information display will show Maintenance Mode. To cancel inspection mode, simply turn the vehicle off. Collision Repair & Refinish Training 8
