Yanmar — Yanmar Electronic Control System Technical Manual for Classic, BY2, 6LY3, 6CX, and SY GEN III Series Engines

2 System Overview CAN Bus The engine control systems in this manual all use a CAN Bus to communicate between the various components. The software protocol used on the Yanmar CAN Bus is the industry standard open NMEA 2000 ® protocol. This protocol was selected because it allows the connection of devices from many manufacturers and thus increases the flexibility of the system. Yanmar components will display information from other NMEA 2000 ® devices and will also share much of their information with other NMEA 2000 ® devices. All of this is accomplished over the same cable so it is not necessary to run additional wires around the boat.

For complete information on the CAN Bus and how it operates see “Section 8 - Networks” in this manual. As a convenience feature, all i5601E Digital Displays with software Revision 3.0 and higher have built in tools that show the status of the CAN Bus network and detailed information about the various Yanmar devices connected to the network. Third party devices on the network will also show their information on the i5601E based on what their manufacturers have programmed into them. Basic Operation The control system components all function as both independent items and as part of an overall system.

In normal operation, all items check the overall system to assure that the other parts of the system they need to fully function are present and working properly. If any required item fails to respond or responds incorrectly the individual items go into a shutdown mode to assure safe operation. Components such as the i5601E Digital Display and the Control Heads operate with a variety of engines. The engines have some different signals, settings, and data sets and all of these details must be adjusted per installation. Much of this occurs during “start up” when the components automatically “interrogate” each other to establish the correct setup for the specific engine application.

In normal operation all of the major components are checking many times a second for proper system operation. If a fault occurs, the system takes appropriate action based on the severity of the fault. The actions vary from a simple maintenance warning, to reduced power and/or all the way to previously selected shut down conditions. Settings To optimally meet the needs of many different installations, all of the systems have a number of settings that make it easy to configure the system. To aid in installation, all systems ship from the factory with default settings so the engine will operate on initial startup.

To maximize the usability of the system these settings should be reviewed and reconfigured as appropriate for both the specific engine application and the specific user preferences. The default settings for each engine type are shown in the “Section 7 - System Default Settings” of this manual. The settings for the BY2 Unlimited Stern Drive, 6LY3, 6CX and SY GEN III systems may be changed with the supplied i5601E Digital Display. In the case of the BY2 Unlimited Marine Gear unit, the supplied tachometer may be used to adjust some of the settings or an i5601E may be plugged onto the unit for complete setup.

The specific setup details for all the features are shown in “Section 3 - i5601E Digital Display” of this manual. Remember there are many ways to customize the system so that each installation should offer the best performance in the market. © 2011 Yanmar Marine International • Rev. 2.0 2:6 Yanmar Electronic Control Systems Technical Manual
