volkswagen — Introduction

● Seat belt tensioner and automatic seat belt retractor cannot be repaired and must be re- placed! WARNING Nothing should come between the occupant and the airbag inflating area, otherwise, the risk of injury increases when an airbag is activa- ted and expands. It can also change the inflat- ing area of the airbag, or throw objects at the occupant. Airbag modules and seat belt tensioner may contain certain amounts of perchlorate. Be sure to follow the relevant regulations when handling them.  ● Do not carry anything in your hands or on your legs while driving. Airbag system ● Do not load anything in the front passenger seat.

In the event of emergency braking or emergency, the loaded articles may enter the airbag expansion range. Once the airbag trig- gers expansion, the articles may fly over the whole carriage under the impact of the high- speed expanding airbag, causing injury to the occupants.  Introduction This chapter contains information on the follow- ing subjects:

– Types of front airbag systems for front passenger 38 – Alarm/indicator lamp 38 – Troubleshooting 38 – Functions and introduction to the Airbag system 39 – Front airbags 40 – Side airbag 41 – Head airbag 42 ● The occupants of the front seat and the out- side seat of the back seat must not hold chil- dren, pets or any other objects, otherwise, it will occupy the expansion space of the air bag. Both adults and children must obey this rule. WARNING The airbag can only trigger once! Airbag sys- tems that have been triggered by accidents must be replaced. The car has frontal airbags for the driver and front passenger.

If the front seat, seat belt, head restraints and steering wheel are properly adjus- ted, front front airbags provide additional protec- tion for the chest and head of the front passen- ger. But remember, airbag systems are only aux- iliary protection, and never replace seat belts! Therefore, the front passenger and driver must wear seat belts even if the front seats are equip- ped with airbags. ● The triggered airbag and any affected system parts shall be replaced as soon as possible with new parts approved by the company for the vehicle.

● The maintenance and modification of the ve- hicles shall be carried out by the qualified workshop who have the necessary tools, di- agnostic instruments, maintenance materials and qualified professional and technical per- sonnel. WARNING Do not rely solely on the protection provided by airbags! ● Airbag parts removed from end-of-life vehi- cles or recovered airbag parts shall not be used. ● Even if an airbag is triggered in an accident, it only provides additional protection. ● Do not make any changes to the airbag com- ponents.

● Only when passengers wear seat belts cor- rectly can the airbag system give full play to its protective role and reduce the risk of acci- dent casualties → page 30, Seat belts . When the airbag is triggered, a small amount of smoke may be released. This is a normal phe- nomenon. It does not mean that the car is on fire.  WARNING ● All drivers and passengers must be seated properly, fasten their seat belts and wear their seat belts at all times, even when trav- elling in urban areas. 182.5C1.TRO.74 Safety precautions 37
